Fresh herbs offer big flavours and nutritional benefits. It’s fun, simple and economic to grow your own herbs. Whether you have a small balcony or large yard, you don’t need a lot of space to keep herbs happy. There is nothing like having a ready supply of fresh herbs to use in a recipe or as a garnish!
Here are a few of our top tips to start or maintain a home garden:
Pick the right plants. Most herbs can be grown indoors, but basil, chives, mint, oregano, parsley, rosemary and thyme tend to thrive indoors.
Start herbs from seed (directly planting in soil) or cuttings or with seedlings from a garden shop.
Use a container with drainage and choose a sunny spot, preferably one that allows your plants at least six hours of sunshine per day.
Keep your plants hydrated and make sure not to overwater them. Soil that is consistently moist but not waterlogged is ideal.
Harvest a little at a time and don’t remove more than a quarter of the plant at a time.
If you see roots coming out of the drainage holes, growth seems to have stalled or the plant starts to flop over, it's time to transplant (move that part of the plant to another growing container).
