Portions, Serving Sizes, Calories, Macronutrients: Explained

Portions, Serving Sizes, Calories, Macronutrients

Every individual has their own daily energy needs. We obtain energy through foods – specifically the calories that make up food. Based on your energy needs, your portion quantity, recommended serving size, total calories and macronutrient breakdown will be unique to you. At Honey Bee Meals, our prepared healthy, pre-portioned meals can help you obtain your energy needs. We have a variety of types and sizes of meals which will allow you to choose which meals would best work for you and your diet.

Simply put, a portion is the amount of food that is on your plate. Contrary to what the “diet” industry would like us to believe, portion control does not require taking drastic measures.  Carrying around coloured measuring cups or a food scale really isn’t necessary.  Initially it may be helpful to use these tools to learn what a serving size should look like and we use these tools while preparing your delicious meals to make things even easier for you!  Visual clues are also helpful in getting to know how big a serving really is.  For instance, a cup of broccoli is the size of a baseball; 2 cups of leafy greens are the size of 2 baseballs. A half cup of fresh fruit is the size of a tennis ball and 3 ounces of meat or fish is about the size of a deck of cards.

Understanding the portions that work for you is an important healthy-eating strategy. This allows you to eat a wide variety of foods while keeping your calories in check.  Calories represent stored energy and are calculated based on the amount of heat produced when a food is burned.  The human digestive system is very complex and everyone’s bodies process calories in different ways. Counting calories, or total daily grams of protein, carbohydrate and fat (the macronutrients) is a helpful tool in weight loss but is certainly not foolproof.

The “diet” industry and many other mass media outlets, send us the message that the less food you eat, the better.  We know now that is not always true.  We are learning that the key to managing a healthy weight is not just about counting calories but about a total lifestyle: adequate sleep, stress management, physical activity, daily meditation and so much more.  At Honey Bee Meals we believe in a balanced diet with meals full of ingredients that fuel your body and keep you satiated and your energy level high. If you are enjoying healthy, nutritious food, and you do not have other health problems, your internal system will tell you when to eat and when to stop eating.

Whether you enjoy a Paleo, Low Carb, Keto, Vegetarian or Vegan diet you can count on Honey Bee Meals for delicious and nutritious meals delivered right to your door.  We prepare each of our meals with a balance of what we believe are the keys to healthy eating including foods that contain fat, carbohydrates and protein. We take care of the shopping, chopping and cleaning up so you can focus on enjoying the meal in front of you!
