Holiday entertaining is fast approaching and we love serving a charcuterie board, which is an impressive snack with little fuss. It’s also a great way to accommodate food sensitivities like serving gluten-free, dairy-free and vegan snacks. Plus, you can serve a variety of healthy, good for you choices this holiday season.
Start by choosing a large wooden board and placing a variety of gluten free crackers, including rice crackers, with different shapes and textures in straight or wavy lines the length of the board.
Next, select dairy free “cheeses” at your favourite store. You will be amazed at the selection made with ingredients like cashews or other nut-free options! To keep it interesting, choose a combination of soft and hard options. Slice some into bite sized pieces and serve some whole for guests to portion themselves. Place these “cheeses” in different sections of the board. Then, check your favourite boutique for some gluten and nitrate free cured meats and place them around the board as well (or skip this step for a fully vegan board).
Use small decorative bowls to hold olives, marinated vegetables, hummus, tapenades, and dips and place them randomly on the board. Thinly slice raw vegetables into sticks and create little stacks of each vegetable. Choose vegetables in a variety of colours such as carrots, celery, red, green, yellow, and orange bell peppers, broccoli, cauliflower, cucumbers, and jicama.
If you can find a little pot of honey with a honey dipper add that too!
Slice up some green and red skinned apples and put a little lemon on them to prevent them from turning brown and then fan them out around the board. Place small bunches of green, red and purple grapes where you need some colour! Fresh berries can also be a terrific addition to your board.
If you do not need a nut-free board, consider adding some cashews, almonds or pistachios for a delicious crunchy snack packed with healthy fats.
