Paleo has been a buzz word in health and nutrition for quite some time. You may have heard that following a Paleo diet is good for weight loss or a myriad of other health benefits. Let's take a closer look at what that means; how you can incorporate these principles into your own diet & lifestyle; and the benefits of this approach to food and nutrition.
Paleo comes from the word Palaeolithic, which is described as a period in history (around 2.6 million years ago) where there was the first evidence of tool construction and use by Homo. A paleo diet typically describes a way of eating that limits (or eliminates) foods that were not common during the hunter-gatherer era. This includes avoiding processed foods, like dairy products, legumes and grains. The diet focuses on consuming lean meats, fish, fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds — foods that in the past could be obtained by hunting and gathering.
As with most ways of eating, there are many interpretations as to the "should" and "should not" list; Paleo is no exception. Some experts believe in a "strict" approach to elimination of grains and legumes citing that these foods incite inflammatory responses in our bodies. At Honey Bee Meals, we do not believe in a one-size-fits-all approach to nutrition. Some people thrive by including rice, beans and legumes in their diet while others do not. We like to use the term real food when describing our healthy meal delivery menu and help our customers choose the prepared meals that best suit their needs.
It may seem intimidating to change how you shop, cook and eat but with a few simple focusses (or tweaks) you can apply some hunter-gatherer principles in 2021 to thrive with your nutrition:
